Picking a Color

The most enjoyable part of painting the exterior of your home is choosing the color, said Lizzie Ducharme, a consultant at Whitman Wallpaper & Paint.

The most popular colors for New England homes are yellow and gray, but paint can be mixed to fit any pallet. Ducharme recommends taking the following precautions to ensure the right fit:

  • Take into consideration the surroundings of your home. If you live in the woods, lean toward green and brown hues. If you have a front lawn or distinctly colored shingles on your roof, pick a color that won't clash.

  • Take samples of paint to your house. The colors look very different inside the store than they do outside.

  • Don't look at the sample color horizontally. Hold it vertically in the natural light to experience what it would look like on the side of your house.

  • Look for a thicker, higher-quality paint to get the right color in one coat.

  • Ask at the paint store for a primer that is tined the same color as your topcoat. This can save the cost and labor of applying a second coat of paint.

Let Lizzie Ducharme, Interior Decorator, help you choose the right colors for your home!
